Dr. Samek's Adolescent and Young Adult Development Lab

We aim to study the development of problematic substance use and other potentially co-occurring challenges (e.g., depression) in the adolescent and young adult population. We also strive to implement evidence-based substance use prevention and mental health promotion programs in these populations.

We are guided by biopsychosocial and developmental perspectives, with an emphasis on understanding the role of social context and close relationships in predicting the likelihood of substance use and mental health challenges. We are interested in studying adolescence and young adulthood, as these are the developmental stages such problems are most likely to occur. We are also interested in studying positive aspects of human development at these times, such as the development of prosocial behavior, resilience, and flourishing, as well as other transdiagnostic risk and protective factors (e.g., emotion regulation, disinhibition, impulsivity). Our goal is to help adolescents and young adults achieve their full developmental potential, as well as to find joy and peace in their everyday lives.
