Dr. Samek's Adolescent and Young Adult Development Lab

Image of a figure listing biological, psychological/cognitive, and social predictors on the left in relation to adolescent and young adult problematic substance use and potentially co-occurring problems (e.g., depressive symptoms) on the right. On the right, childhood predictors of adoelscent substance use an later adut outcomes are also shown. These words/topics are shown in bright orangeand blue boxes and circles.

We aim to study the development of problematic substance use and internalizing and externalizing  symptoms in the adolescent and young adult population. This refers to studying behaviors like frequent and heavy alcohol use, cannabis use, substance use that impairs psychological, social, or physical health, depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as aggression and rule-breaking behaviors. We also strive to inform and implement evidence-based substance use prevention and mental health promotion programs in adolescent and young adult populations.

We are guided by biopsychosocial and developmental perspectives, with an emphasis on understanding the role of social context and close relationships in predicting the likelihood and consequences of substance use and mental health challenges. We are interested in studying adolescence and young adulthood, as these are the developmental stages such problems are most likely to occur. We are also interested in studying positive aspects of human development at these times, such as the development of prosocial behavior, resilience, and flourishing, as well as other transdiagnostic risk and protective factors (e.g., emotion regulation, disinhibition, impulsivity). Our goal is to empower adolescents and young adults to achieve their full developmental potential, as well as to find joy and peace in their everyday lives.
